This collection of images where taken in 2001 as part of a commission
for
the Independent on Sunday Review Magazine. I was hired to photograph
Gibraltar and give it and "end of the world feeling". Aside from the
main
purpose of my visit to Gibraltar I decided to produce a set of images
which
would inquire into the dual (Spanish and British) identity of
Gibraltar.
I was born in Spain near Gibraltar and I visited it a few times as a
boy.
The landscapes were then very familiar to me but there were components
which
were also very alien. This memory, together with the fact that I have
now
lived in the UK for 14 years, gives me an understanding of the
British/Spanish Gibraltar's identity. Familiar Landscape is one of the
most
personal projects I have done.
